Force of Nature: Tidal Ware Jewelry

This seagull necklace is nature-inspired without being overly delicate.

Tell us about a new accessories collection inspired by the ocean, and we’re likely to start imagining dainty baubles fashioned with some amalgam of shells, freshwater pearls and softly tinkling semi-precious stones that are, we can only suspect, destined for the wrists and necks of delicate people.

But we are often wrong. The latest local designer to surprise us with a nature-inspired collection imbued with unmistakable edge is Sharla Pidd, who named her jewelry line Tidal Ware as a pean of sorts to her recurring nightmares of tidal waves.

Using chains, charms, stones such as drusy and mixed metals from brass to copper and gold, Pidd fashions pieces that manage to incorporate nature without letting it take over (as it is sometimes apt to do in life). We love the heavy, street chic look of the seagull necklace above.

Until Pidd launches her web site, which we hear is coming soon, you’ll have to track the artist down in person for more glimpses of her work. While her web site is in the works, email tidalware (at) gmail (dot) com to reach Pidd.
