Hotel room occupancy rates are up in Santa Clara.

Here's a positive sign for the Bay Area economy and Silicon Valley in particular.  The city of Santa Clara is seeing a significant increase in hotel occupancy rates.

The eight full service hotels near the Santa Clara Convention Center and Great America are averaging 75 percent occupancy in 2010 and that is up 12-percent over last year.

And hotels aren't cutting rates to do it.  According to the Santa Clara Convention and Visitors Bureau, average daily room rates are $120 this year compared to $113 last year.

Steve Van Dorn, President and CEO of the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce and Convention-Visitors Bureau  said the number show that people are traveling for business and attending meetings again.

In case you were wondering the big hotels are:

Those numbers will clearly jump big time when the 49ers build a stadium in the center of the city. That is scheduled to happen 2014.
