    The Gardener
A few of the many pleasant surprises at The Gardener.

Smack-dab in the center of the internationally acclaimed San Francisco Ferry Building is a local gem simply named The Gardener. This shop stands out amongst the plethora of Farmer's Market type merchants.

It welcomes locals and visitors with an array of clever, useful and unusual choices. The Gardener was first established years ago just across the Bay in Berkeley.

Well known for exceptional landscape, table-scape and general life-scape merchandise, the original store has a loyal following of customers from all over the Bay Area, Marin County and far beyond. Although just a fraction of the size of the flagship store, the SF location is no less impressive in presentation and is certainly in the top tier of San Francisco lifestyle stores. It is an attractive, compact and well stocked mercantile- its wide open entry and welcoming displays can entice even the most discerning shopper.

Categories range from standard gardening supplies to cookbooks authored by locals like Alice Waters. There are collectible handwoven shopping baskets reminiscent of those found at the markets in Paris, along with distinctive, handmade jewelry and sophisticated, eye-catching handbags and totes.

One tote that deserves a spot in the limelight is this leather number by Newport Beach designer, Pallie. It is quickly identified by its soft leather exterior and contrast stitch detailing. The added bonus to this chic carry-all: the lining is cork. Truly. It is oh so au-current and just one of the many styles up Pallie's sleeve.

The tabletop category is full of delightful trappings; attractive, sophisticated items to create a memorable setting for any occasion. The selection includes natural fabric linens, hand formed bowls, woven place-mats, unique centerpieces and even the necessary ambiance lights. There is even artwork available by the very talented artist Sylvia Gonzalez, known for her oversized fruit series- just take it off the wall.

    The Gardener
is full of pleasant surprises and a perfect stop for stocking stuffers.
