A number of Bay Area transportation agencies, including Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano and Santa Clara counties want to increase vehicle registration fees by $10 a year.
State budget cuts are hitting counties hard and now local lawmakers want to pass the cost on to drivers.
The money would help fix potholes, improve public transit and add sidewalks to roads. A simple majority vote would be needed to pass such a measure.
Lawmakers are looking to put the measure on the November ballot.
