The driver of the pickup was taken into police custody.

Los Angeles Airport Police officers stopped the Chevy Silverado at 10:49 a.m. at a checkpoint on westbound Century Boulevard at Sepulveda Boulevard, one of the main entrances into the passenger terminal area, said Nancy Suey Castles of Los Angeles World Airports.

What started out as a routine inspection of the truck uncovered a small arsenal of weaponry.

Early in the day, Castles said 37 guns were found. A final count revealed a smaller amount.

"After unpacking and counting all items, the total count is 10 handguns, five rifles, an antique black-powder musket, and nearly 1,000 rounds of ammunition were found in several boxes in the back of the truck," Castles said. "One of the handguns and the musket were loaded."

The man was handcuffed and taken to the airport police station, and an officer drove the truck to the police station from the checkpoint, Castles said.

"The driver was arrested at 12:20 p.m. for weapons transportation violations, and will be booked at the (Los Angeles Police Department's) Pacific Division," Castles said.

The driver told police he was coming to the airport to pick someone up.

"I'm a nice guy. I'm trying to be nice and cooperative -- it doesn't work," the man said, as he was being escorted by police.

Personnel from the LAPD, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were involved in the investigation.

"As to what he was doing here at the airport, there's no indication that there was any overall evil intent," said Sgt. Jim Holcomb of the Los Angeles World Airport Police.

The vehicle was registered to an Orange County development company.

  • annoyed reader Tuesday, Feb 10 at 12:00 AM FLAG COMMENT Hey, I'm a friend of the Mr. Dominguez's daughter Meagan. First of all, I just want to express my outrage at the news stations who blew this out of proportion and just went for a story, which might I add was incomplete. If these reporters could get this story straight, they would realize that the police overreacted to a man who OPENLY informed the police of the contents of his LOCKED trunk. They should be criticizing the poli ... MORE >
  • Robert Thursday, Jan 29 at 5:41 PM FLAG COMMENT I also hate hearing gun haters intrude on other's rights with stupid opinions! Yes, it was foolish to have guns or other tools of such within a vehicle around an airport these days...Everyone is jumpy! The man was just picking someone up at the airport and had his hobby "a nice gun collection and associated ammunition" in his trunk. They could have been stored at his house but he was obviously on his way at some point to a ... MORE >

  • A Free American Wednesday, Jan 14 at 9:01 PM FLAG COMMENT This is for "eric", You have got to be one of, no scatch that, The most uninformed, stupid, idiot to post on the incident! You certainly don't have ANY of the facts-that are readily available. EVEN the police said that Mr. Dominguez "meant no one any harm and was apparently here to pick up a friend". Your ignorance and eagerness to show it are AMAZING. By the way, they interviewed that friend from out of state for 3 hours ... MORE >
