Owners of a Grass Valley farm where pheasants are raised are still trying to capture thousands of birds that got loose during last week's storm.
Kim Sterchi, co-owner of Sierra Ranch, said about 8,000 to 10,000 pheasants escaped when snow destroyed nets used to contain the birds. The loss may reach about $100,000.
The nets are constructed like large tents, but snow built up and ripped them.
Sterchi said workers have been out from about 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. each day to capture birds that are now walking around the farm. About 2,500 pheasants have been snagged so far, but many simply flew the coop.
Sterchi said her insurance will not cover the loss of the birds or the netting.
Some of the escaped birds are wearing specks on their beaks, which prevent them from pecking other birds. The birds can still eat while wearing the specks.
