Vanessa Redgrave's True Love on Film In “Letters To Juliet”

Vanessa Redgrave's role in "Letters To Juliet" has been an island of romantic peace in emotionally trying times for the iconic actress. In the movie, she stars as a woman reunited with her lost love (with the help of Amanda Seyfried) after decades of separation.

Her onscreen love is also her real-life husband, Italian actor Franco Nero, who was reunited with Redgrave after decades apart. It's case of art mirroring true-romantic life. Redgrave cannot even recall if they have played a husband-a-wife onscreen, much less a couple reuniting after decades apart as they did.

"We've done quite a few films but not necessarily at all playing a relationship," Redgrave tells PopcornBiz. "We did three Italian films when we first met. And he and I have done a few one-off appearances and recitals."

The two met on the set of 1967 film "Camelot" and it didn't work out the first time they were together. Decades later they reunited and decided to marry on New Year's Eve 2006.

While this romantic twist adds a boost to the romantic appeal of "Letters," which opens on Friday, Redgrave insists the two were a "package deal" for the film.

"I'm me and Franco is Franco," she says. "The more you know and love someone, the more you don't tread on their tracks."

Redgrave has had to overcome tremendous personal loss over the past year, including the death of her daughter Natasha Richardson last year. Her brother, actor Corin Redgrave died in April. And after completing press obligations for "Letters," Redgrave's sister Lynn Redgrave died of breast cancer.
