Paul Dano Saddles Up for “Cowboys & Aliens”

With "Iron Man 2" sitting comfortably atop the box office charts, director Jon Favreau is busy plotting his next blockbuster, having just added a talented actor to an already great cast and begun contemplating a venture into the third dimension.

Paul Dano, best known for his incredible performance opposite Daniel Day Lewis in"There Will Be Blood," has joined the cast of Favreau's "Cowboys & Aliens," an adaptation of the comic tale about cowboys and Indians coming together to fight a common foe in the 19-century American Southwest.

It'll be interesting to see if Dano can break out of his shell in this one, as he has a tendency to play small, quiet intense characters --  having seen him out in the wild, that seems to be his comfort zone. But it's hard to imagine a part like that in a movie like "Cowboys & Aliens."

"Cowboys" already stars Daniel Craig as an amnesiac cowboy, Harrison Ford grizzled as the grizzled old Colonel Dolarhyde, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell as Doc the bartender and Heavy D.

As to whether "Cowboys & Aliens" joins the 3D hit parade, that remains to be seen, according to Favreau.

"Spent the week prepping Cowboys & Aliens. Shot 3D tests. Weighing out all options," he tweeted on Friday. This came a day after he tweeted, "Is 2D dead?" We leave it to you to draw your won conclusions.

Love the story, love the cast, very much looking forward to July 29, 2011.
