2 Million iPhone 5s Sold in 1 Day

The previous iPhone, the 4S, was the record holder for most units sold the quickest. The new iPhone 5 has topped that record with 2 million handhelds pre-sold, almost doubling the 4S' output.

In a statement on its website, Apple writes that the majority of iPhones will ship on September 21, but that some, due to the popularity, will not ship until October.

"iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we've ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do," Apple's Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Philip Schiller said.

(Would the Cube count as a more beautiful product? Meh, it's subjective.)

The new model is available at Apple's 356 retail stores in the United States, as well as at Verizon, AT&T and Wal-Mart starting this Friday morning. At the Apple stores, users get free customized set up for their phones, including some app awareness.

That'll make the waiting line move a little faster, right??

AT&T piggy-backed the Apple announcement, declaring this the most successful iPhone launch, ever.

People are already camped out in New York and London, awaiting the hands-on moment.

The new iPhone sports a larger screen, a lighter and thinner body and a better camera, along with software upgrades and a new Apple Maps interface. Prices range from $199 to $399 on the new model.
