VIDEO: Facebook Reaches 1 Billion

Facebook announced today that it has a billion monthly users accessing its social network, at least according to its own data.

"If you're reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you," Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg wrote on the Facebook Newsroom page. "Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life."

Zuckerberg answered more questions at Bloomberg Businessweek, including how it plans to use a billion users. "When we were at a half a billion people, you got these large-scale services like Skype or Netflix that also had big user bases. And we weren't yet at that point where the majority of their users were Facebook users, so they couldn't rely on us as a piece of critical infrastructure for registration," he said. "Now really everyone can start to rely on us as infrastructure. That's a pretty big shift."

It is true that seemingly more and more site are requesting Facebook logins, so Zuckerberg is correct in that Facebook is getting that elusive universal appeal. Let's just hope that Facebook realizes that with great power comes great responsibility.
