Only four speakers, out of 21 altogether, at Facebook's developers conference, f8, are women, according to reports.
The one-day conference on April 30 is supposed to bring Facebook developers and tech leaders together in San Francisco, but the only women speaking are all from Facebook: developer advocate Bear Douglas and product managers Stephanie Shum, Allison Swope and Sharon Zeng, according to the Huffington Post.
Other speakers include executives from Instagram and Parse, who will also have sessions on monetization, app building and other interests. It should be said that the four female speakers is an improvement on the first conference in 2011 which had only one female speaker out of 15.
There's a lack of female leadership and representation in Silicon Valley, and some of that may have to do with fewer women in engineering or the "brogrammer" culture that can be found in Silicon Valley these days -- the idea that female engineers aren't as competent and/or they can be seen as conquests, or hopeful conquests, in the tech industry. Some say there's also a very masculine vibe that doesn't make it inclusive for women and many leave the business.
