Twitter More Popular With Teens Than Facebook

Twitter is the most popular social network for teens, according to a new survey.

The study of 8,600 teens by investment firm Piper Jaffray showed that they chose Twitter 26 percent versus 23 percent for Facebook, according to Agence France-Presse. Another 4 percent chose Tumblr and 3 percent favored Google+.

The most illuminating statistic is that last year, Facebook was preferred 33 percent, showing a 10 percent drop this year among teens. Although statistics for all social networks weren't given, part of the drop could be from the newer social networks such as Whatsapp and Snapchat which are gaining huge teen followings.

The news comes at a good time for Twitter, just before its $1 billion initial public offering. The news can only help raise its value. Currently the microblogging service has around 218 million active users and raised $316 million in revenue last year, according to the Voice of America.

However, it's not all bad for Facebook. Piper Jaffray senior analyst Gene Munster said that Facebook hasn't really lost users because its acquisition Instagram also had 23 percent of teens choosing the app.  "Instagram picked up a lot of [the] share. Probably the best way to think about Facebook is to look at Instagram and Facebook in aggregate," Munster told VOA.

So, in some ways, Facebook still has 56 percent of the teen market.
