An original Apple I computer sold for $374,500 at Sotheby's after a bidding war between two buyers.
The 1976 computer, which still powers up, was sold in New York Friday to an anonymous telephone bidder, according to CNN. The price was more than double the $180,000 estimate by the auction house.
Apple founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak built the Apple I computer 36 years ago and it was initially sold at the Silicon Valley chain Byte Shop. Fifty of the computers were bought at $500 each and then sold for $666.66 each. Jobs and Wozniak put them together in just 30 days.
Is almost $375,000 too much for a computer without a monitor, keyboard, power supply or case? We would say yes, but part of the reason for its high price is its rarity. It was one of only 200 created in 1976, and likely less than half of those still exist. However, we still don't know who the mystery buyer was -- could it have been The Woz?
