In this age of misinformation, State Controller John Chiang has done the public a simple service: he has a new web site, State Finances 101, with basic information about California, its population and its budget.
This might seem low-brow, but surveys show that only a tiny minority of Californians know that education is by far the biggest state budget item and that most state tax revenues come from the personal income tax.
