Fiorina, Boxer Agree on One Area: Novel Plan For Fixing LA Transit

U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer and her Republican challenger Carly Fiorina disagree on so much that their agreement on a matter important to Los Angeles and California came as a relief.

Both support the groundbreaking 30-10 plan to expedite the building of transit in LA.

This is no small thing.

30-10 refers to a plan, advanced by LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, to use federal loans and other subsidies to speed up 30 years of public transit infrastructure projects -- including new subway and light rail on the Westside and in the San Gabriel Valley and South Los Angeles -- into 10. These projects were approved, along with a tax to fund them, by voters in 2008. The 30-10 acceleration makes sense as a way to save cash -- it's cheaper to acquire land and hire construction workers now -- and to get a bigger economic bang for the buck. The transit projects could create more than 150,000 jobs.

Fiorina has built her campaign around fervent opposition to the federal stimulus package passed year. So it's good news for California that she supports this. It may be inconsistent, but political consistency is the hobgobblin of little minds after all.

(And we are determinedly small minded at Prop Zero, except of course, when we're not).
