Teachers Watch TV As Superintendent Watches

Jason Song's story today's LA Times starts with an incredible anecdote about Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Ramon Cortines visiting a high school for the development disabled:

Cortines "observed instructors watching a soap opera during class time. 'They didn't even make an effort to turn it off when I was there.'"

So the teachers were fired on the spot?

Nope. Union protections make such quick action nearly impossible, and firing teachers very difficult, as The Times has previously shown. The good news is that Cortines is looking to make changes in the school.
