One Step Forward, One Step Back for Giants: Longoria Activated, Belt to DL

SAN FRANCISCO -- It was one step forward, one step back for the Giants lineup.

Evan Longoria came off the disabled list before Thursday's game, but Brandon Belt was put on the DL with a hyperextended right knee. Belt injured his knee while running to first on Wednesday and was removed from the game against the Mariners. This is his second time on the DL this season.

The Giants also recalled Chris Stratton to serve as a long reliever, optioning Kelby Tomlinson back to Triple-A.

Longoria hasn't played since June 14, when he fractured his fifth metacarpal. He played four rehab games with the Sacramento River Cats and was eager to return. The Giants had a bit more urgency to add him to the roster after Belt's injury. Pablo Sandoval, who had been playing third base, can slide over to first to fill in for Belt.

The flurry came with a quirk. The Giants originally optioned Ty Blach to the minors after Wednesday's game, but Blach was brought back hours later because the team decided to clear a spot by instead putting Belt on the disabled list.
