    Red Sox release Pablo Sandoval five days after DFAing him

    After designating Pablo Sandoval for assignment on Friday, the Red Sox had 10 days to trade him or release him.

    They only needed five days.

    Boston released Sandoval on Wednesday afternoon, officially bringing his tenure with the Red Sox to an end.

    Sandoval was in the middle of the third year of a five-year, $95 million contract with Boston. In two and a half seasons with Red Sox, Sandoval played in 161 games. He hit .237/.286/.360 with 27 doubles, 14 home runs and 59 RBI.
