GOLDEN STATE SCRIBE: Robert Louis Stevenson didn't spend much time in California, but fans of the "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" scribe know that his wife Fanny hailed from Oakland, and the Scottish author himself spent some recuperative time in Napa Valley. An area plaque was placed in the author's honor of May 7, 1911, and fans and lit buffs will return to honor the monument's 100th anniversary. And, unlike many 100th anniversary celebrations, which tend to happen in the vicinity of the actual anniversary, this one is hitting the mark: May 7, 2011 is the date, and 1 p.m. is the time.
DETAILS OF THE DAY: The Silverado Brewing Company will be catering the St. Helena-close event, and Stevenson scholars will speak. But it won't be all about standing adjacent the monument and hearing stirring words; there will be "guided hikes to the nearby historic places discussed in Stevenson's books!," according to organizers. A hike into the wilder world sounds truly Stevenson-esque to us. Perhaps you'll want to memorize your own ode to say among the trees. We all should know a few stirring words to say when the moment calls for it, yes?
