Santa Cruz Bluegrass Fair

FIDDLE FUN: Summer doesn't own any one type of music (strike that; maybe summer does own any music you enjoy while sitting on someone's shoulders while wearing a tube top). But bluegrass feels plenty warm-weather-y to us. Sure, there's some fireside fiddling that goes down in the wintertime, but the form's loose-limbed, string-strong sounds fit this easier, breezier time of year. It also helps that there are a whole bevy of excellent bluegrass festivals around the country starting in May. The Santa Cruz Bluegrass Fair is certainly in that group, and has been for a quarter century. The 2011 date for the music hootenanny is Saturday, May 21.

HAPPY 25 YEARS: Several acts are making for Santa Cruz's San Lorenzo Park, including Harmony Grits and Windy Hill. It's a free fest, which means you can save your funds for the food purveyors in attendance. You've got to kick a heel or two to a sweet steel guitar ballad or turn-your-pardner toe-tapper, right? Sustenance is required when quality bluegrassing is going down.
