STAR STAMP: It could not have been an easy task for the United States Postal Service to decide where exactly to launch the new stamp that will pay tribute to a certain writer who goes by the handle Mark Twain. Mr. Twain was associated with a number of prominent locations in a few states, and a few locations in our own (hi, Angels Camp and Twain Harte and San Francisco and much of Gold Country). But Sacramento, and specifically Old Sacramento, with its gold ties and Pony Express background and delta-proud history is a fine and important place to hold the important unveiling. And that unveiling is occurring on Saturday, June 25 at 1 p.m. Twain buffs and historic fans and lovers of all things Old Sac should get to the Passenger Station at the Old Sacramento State Park for all the convivialities.
ALSO: "Time Travel Weekends" are about to kick off in the historic area in early July, so ceremony attendees will get a sneak peek at that. Plus a Boy Scout Color Guard troupe will be on hand to lend stamp support, and surely a few fans in 19th-century dress will be out in force, too. Will Mr. Twain himself show, or someone paying honor? Why indeedy he will (or someone doing a fine approximation). Good times.
