Lotusland: The Season's First Lotus Bloom

LotusFest! is still a few weeks out, but the historic Santa Barbara garden's famous namesake is making a showy showing.

THE FIRST FLOWER: Even if you're not a through-and-through nature watcher, and you only notice the jasmine blooms or purple jacaranda trees a week or two after they've gone into full and fabulous flower, you can grok to the notion that the first of anything is pretty darn exciting. Especially, of course, when it comes to those fore-tellers and prognosticators of the seasons, the plants and shrubs and buds of our wild and cultivated world. And a first has happened, for the 2017 season, at Ganna Walska Lotusland, a serene Santa Barbara spot that's so synonymous with a particular flower that the flower in question appears in the place's very name. We do speak of...

THE LOTUS... here, and while LotusFest!, the property's annual celebration of the water-loving specimen, happens in July, you can see lotuses begin to pop up, here and there, a number of weeks ahead of the summertime gathering. In fact, lotus lookie-loos, you'll likely see more lotus action in the weeks ahead, for the first lotus has been spied on the grounds. The poster-worthy photograph was posted on Tuesday, May 23, meaning that, into June, some solid petal action shall be seen. But if you want to wait for LotusFest! to really find your flower-based bliss, put...

SATURDAY, JULY 15... on your calendar. It's a special day at Lotusland, with vinos, tunes, bites, and more. Detail? Follow a lotus-lined pathway to all you need to know.
