Mondavi Summer Sounds: Concert Series

Big names and fab wines: 2017's warmest stretch is looking stellar.

NAPA VALLEY'S TURN-IT-UP SUMMER SCENE... will move into full, sway-along, sing-along gear over Memorial Day Weekend with BottleRock Napa Valley. But more tune-taculars will pop up on the N.V. calendar following the multi-day music festival, and, if you plan right, and you get all of your friends on the same thread, and everyone volunteers to take on designated driving duties, you can take in a bunch of the shows. Five of the biggies, in fact, will all happen at one spot, Robert Mondavi Winery, which is once again hosting its annual Margrit Mondavi Summer Concert Series (in association with BottleRock). We breezily say "once again" but, if we could, and were so inclined, we'd add about 47 more "agains" to that statement, for 2017 is...

YEAR 48... for this well-attended, well-loved, well-wined-and-fooded festival. Opening date for the Oakville-based to-do is Saturday, July 1 — that seems like an easy one to remember, and it is also the first day of Fourth of July weekend, if you have some time off there — and the last night of the run happens to be the last Saturday of July, so you're looking at July 29. That's right, there are five Saturdays in July, and five shows, including, in order, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, Patti LaBelle, The Revivalists, Michael Franti & Spearhead, and Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals (let's also note that Allen Stone opens for Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness and Jamestown Revival for The Revivalists). This is why we went ahead and assumed you'd like to see them all, because the line-up is so very strong. Also adding flavor is Oxbow Public Market, which'll have vittles for sale, in addition to other vendors, and, of course, the vinos from the historical winery where you're jamming out.

IF YOU NOTICED THAT THE NAME... of the series now includes Ms. Mondavi, this is for a touching reason, and tribute. She established the first concert series in 1969, and, after her 2016 passing, the winery wanted to weave her "commitment to music in the Napa Valley" into the popular event's title. As for the beneficiary? Proceeds will again go to helping the music programs at the Napa Valley Unified School District. Tickets? Get that early, summer's-coming feeling over here.
