SO YOU HAVE A FILM-OBSESSED FRIEND, the kind of pal who can tell you not only the year on any movie you mention, but who wrote it, who directed it, where it was shot, and at least five different trivia factoids about it, from what actor was originally slated to play the father to how many takes the emotional final scene took. They're the sort of special person you want to treat with a truly cinematic gift come the holidays, the kind of present that goes well beyond a favorite film (and, yes, they own all of their favorite films, on four different formats, including that beloved tape they first saw it on in 1983). Oh, yes, and movie stars do attend, both to appear at special Q&As and because their movie happens to be playing. That is all takes place in November, one of wine country's most lovely months in the leafy-pretty-foliage department? Perfection. That you can now buy a pass, at a discount, to the 2018 festival? High fives all around. It's all happening again from Nov. 7 through 11, 2018, and a five-day pass is currently $245, instead of the standard $295. A pass plus? That's $645, instead of $695. As for what works'll screen? That remains to be seen (one wonders if some of them aren't shooting right now, with eleven months still to go). But here's something cinematic to picture: Your friend's face when they open up the pass to NVFF you got them, just because they rule. Well, you do, too.
