New in Nevada City: Village Market Day

Stroll by antiques and sidewalk sales during this mid-May happening.

IF YOU EQUATE "VINTAGE" AND NEVADA CITY, well, that's beyond understandable. After all, the Sierra foothills town looks as though it just emerged from a sepia-toned photograph, one that was snapped in the late 1800s. Adding to the burg's charms, beyond its highly historic buildings? So many great pieces of clothing, items from a long-ago decade, can be found in its colorful shops. Discover your next top hat, or bustle, or high-collared velvet duster in one of the town's stores and you're ready to join the aforementioned sepia snapshot. So when a Nevada City regular hears that something new is coming to town, as in a new event, well, they may have to pause awhile and roll the word "new" over in their brain for a few minutes. Of course, Nevada City has plenty of newness and nowness, all year long, but its sepia style can often rule. Good thing, then, that the newest addition to the Nevada City calendar has some of that wayback quaint-a-tude, making it the perfect new-old event. It's...

NEVADA CITY VILLAGE MARKET DAY, and it arrives on Sunday, May 20. It's happening at the same time as the Nevada City Craft Fair, which will be going on at the beautiful Miners Foundry Cultural Center, and it will bring with it "... antique and artisan vendors and sidewalk sales throughout downtown Nevada City" from 11 a.m to 5 o'clock. Look for "historic bargains" and other finds as you stroll, and be sure to stop in the shops and restaurants for more looking, purchasing, eating, and quaffing. Can you not wait for summer's outdoor fairs, and vintage-y coolness, and small-town-y splendors? Here's your first stop, a full month before summer officially begins, a new event in a very old and awesome Gold Country town.
