Take a deeper look around our museum-plentiful capital on the first Saturday in February.

SOAKING UP THE SACRAMENTO SIGHTS? You'll want to take in glorious Tower Bridge, one of the epic Golden State spans, and the beautiful rivers and trails, too, and the California State Capitol, and Old Sacramento, and Sutter's Fort State Historic Park, and the huge line-up of museums that dot the culture-packed city. The sheer museum-a-tude of Sacramento can overwhelm, delightfully, and often astonish, completely, and deciding where to devote a few precious and curiosity-filled hours can require a lot of careful decision-making on the just-visiting visitor's part. What can help, though? When those museums offer half-off entry or completely waive admission. This isn't to say that getting into the museum might be expedited, but a special day of discounted or free looking-around has a rather magical way of encouraging us to get out and try a few new institutions we've been meaning to check out. And such a day is just ahead, on the first Saturday in February, and it is...

SACRAMENTO MUSEUM DAY: It's the 20th annual year for this popular event, which covers, count 'em up, some 26 museums in all. On the 2018 list? The California Automobile Museum, the Maidu Museum & Historic Site, the Museum of Medical History, the Roseville Utility Exploration Center, and the Sacramento History Museum, among several others. "Most" are free, though note there will be a discounted admission at the Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town. It's a very well-attended event, which means arriving earlier in the day at your chosen stops is probably on the wise side. And though Sacramento Museum Day is slated to last through 5 p.m., entries at the various locations will stop around 4 o'clock. SO have you ever experienced that delicious feeling of being slightly overwhelmed in the capital city, just by all of the things you can see and learn in all of those many museums? Address that, for (mostly) free, on Saturday, Feb. 3.
