So Very Soon: Yosemite's Housekeeping Camp Opens in April

The classic national park experience debuts in mid-April 2018.

NEXT MONTH IS NEARLY HERE: If you're saying "next year" about something, the truth is this: That something is still a considerable ways off. No, it isn't a decade, and, yes, it'll be here before you know it, but the concept of "next year" is one that suggests an event is not imminent. But once you've trucked out the "next month" about an exciting happening? Oh yeah, you're in the zone. You're practically there, enjoying the moment you've been anticipating, and if you were to pull out your suitcase, or ask a neighbor to water your ferns while you're away, no one would think you were starting too early. Which is all to say this: Get excited, for one of the most summer's-a-comin' openings is now firmly in the "next month" zone, as of this typing, and if you're hoping we're about to type Housekeeping Camp, and Yosemite National Park, well, save that hope-filled energy and direct it toward packing, making travel arrangements, and, first off,

SECURING THAT RESERVATION: Bookings are already flying for the top o' summer months, that warmer stretch, but dates are still available, here and there, for the half year that Housekeeping welcomes overnighters. Well, it is juuuust under a half year — April 14 to Oct. 9, 2018 are the dates — and the October end of the reservations is very much a "weather permitting" sort of deal. The historic camp is pretty legendary, both with regular Yosemiters and once-and-awhile stop-by-ers, but if you're not familiar with it, it is a Merced River-close set-up that "... features three-sided concrete structures with canvas roofs and privacy curtains." So, you got it, you will not, repeat, not need to arrive with a tent in tow, should you snag a reservation. Sleeping bags, yes, absolutely, pack those, and several other camp-ready needs (check 'em out here). It's a wilderness adventure that is already "started" for you, giving you more time to hang out by the campfire, chat up campers, enjoy some breathe-deep hikes, and stare at the stars above. This all begins next month, as in April, as in April 14, at Yosemite National Park. So soon, so very soon, arrive quicker, April, please.
