The Catalina Island Classic

Watch daring skateboarders zip down those famous winding hills.

HILL COUNTRY: Ever tooled around Catalina Island in one of its famous symbols, the golf cart? If you have, you're likely familiar with the rolling terrain around Avalon. Maybe "rolling terrain" isn't nearly descriptive enough; the hills of the island are kind of what make the island, right? When you're pulling up on your boat, it is that dramatic uneven landscape that catches the breath and makes people pull out the cameras en masse. Now imagine taking those hills not in a golf cart, or even on foot, but on a skateboard. Did your feet just go tingly? Ours did, and do, every time we think about the Catalina Island Classic. The Rivera Skateboards-presented Classic, in short, is a thrilling skateboard street race over the Avalon-close hills. And pros of the board and fans of the sport will be out enjoying island time over the Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6.

OH YEAH, IT IS FAST: Even if you can't make it out we implore you to watch the video; it will make you see those hills you know via golf cart through fresh eyes. And if you can't make it out to the Classic, you can make it to San Diego's own Museum of Man, which is currently featuring "Ramp It Up: Skateboard Culture in Native America." There's a special focus on Hawaii's role in skateboarding, which further proves that islands and the board have a long and lustrous history.
