Vintage Vroom: Quail Motorcycle Rally

See the "pre- and post-war eras" of some of the world's poshest bikes.

HOTEL ASSOCIATIONS: If you're a mondo inn or famous stay-over property, chances are very good that you've got something people associate with you beyond rooms or dining. Perhaps you hold a gingerbread house contest each holiday season, or you're known for swimming pools or outdoor movies. Or, if you're the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, you're all about gleaming dashboards, fancy fenders, and the automobiles of yore (and tomorrow, too). The golf course-famous destination is much associated with the motor sports and a quartet of car-and-cycle events each year, including the Quail Rally, the Quail Ride, the summertime's The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, and The Quail Motorcycle Gathering. That happening pulls onto the property each spring, and will again on Saturday, May 17, with a few special history-minded events in tow.

LIKE... "100 Years of Speed Trials at the Bonneville Salt Flats." Indeed, the arid race space is a good drive from Carmel, but count on seeing several of the cycles that broke records, and made history, at Bonneville. "(B)oth pre- and post-war eras of the world's finest sports and racing bikes" get a lot of play during the day, meaning that all machines on the grounds'll come with a story or two. "Antique, Japanese, European, Competition, American, Off-Road, Custom/Modified, and Superbike" are all categories that will be represented.

ATTENDING: Your ticket costs seventy five bucks and includes lunch. Will their be vendors on the ground catering to all manner of motor-minded things and some craft brew sellers, too? There shall be, plus a bevy of people involved in the sport, including Grand Prix legend Eddie Lawson.
