Yum: Sweet Old Sac's Chocolate Week

The historic district has several gooey, luscious doings heading into Mother's Day 2018.

FANCY CHOCOLATES... may rule Valentine's Day, and Halloween, too, and, oh yes, Christmas and Easter, but there are moments on the calendar when the creamy, gooey, caramel-filled, salt-topped candies suddenly cameo, as if by surprise. Take Mother's Day, which might be seen, at least by some people as more of a brunchy moment, an occasion that is mimosa-scented and as satisfying as toast and eggs. But chocolate has a starring role in the May holiday, too, thanks to all of those boxes of goodies that we buy for our dear mothers. What, though, should you do if your dear mother really likes chocolate and a box on her big day just won't suffice? Best call her up for a road trip, then turn your wheels for Old Sacramento, which will throw a chewy, flavor-filled...

CHOCOLATE WEEK... in the days just before Mother's Day, which is on Sunday, May 13 in 2018. The dessert-focused event, which is just under a week, opens on Tuesday, May 8 and stows the sweet tastes on Saturday, May 12. What will those five days deliver? Look for "... delicious and delectable chocolate events throughout the historic district all week long." Think a paint night, and pairings, and more to-dos centered around the confection. Tango & Chocolate is yet another happening, as is Chocolate and Outdoor Latin Dancing. As for the Choc-La-Tour? Expect to try tastes ranging from a chocolate tart at Danny's Mini Donuts to Choc-o-Lot Brownies at Steamers Bakery & Cafe. A tour ticket is $15 and should be purchased ahead of time, online (it's called "a sell-out event"). Best check out the dates, times, and prices for everything, lovers of sweets and Old Sac, before making merry, ahead of Mother's Day, in the charming by-the-river quarter.
