H.O.L.Y. (Hate Often Loves You) Ctiy is an investigation of what it means to cultivate “sanctuary” in the sanctuary city (San Francisco/Yelamu). It takes an uncomfortably intimate look at the violence against people of color and how we keep ourselves/one another “safe.” The performance will invoke ritual performance and community gatherings to bring light to these often overlooked stories and give voice to those previously unheard.
H.O.L.Y. City is a project envisioned and led by artistic director of Urban x Indigenous Sammy Dizon. Urban x Indigenous (UxI) is a multi-disciplinary, inter-generational convening of artists, activists, incubators, scholars, and community members to honor our ancestors in a society which is driven by the act of leaving them behind. Envisioned in 2015 by hip hop dance artist and indigenous arts advocate, Samantha “Sammy” Dizon, this event invites the next generation of movers, shakers, and believers to remember those who lived before us so that we may breathe in the life force of today.
