The Lupus Foundation of Northern California (LFNC) is pleased to announce the 2018 Outrun Lupus 5K, its annual run and walk event to raise funds for patient-focused programs and services of LFNC, as it also celebrates 40 years of service to the lupus community. LFNC invites community members to sign up and fundraise at OutrunLupus.org.
Systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE for short, is one of a number of illnesses known as the autoimmune diseases. Every individual is protected from "invasions" of viruses and bacteria by an immune systems'groups of cells in the blood and lymph system that circulate throughout the body and attack anything they recognize as "foreign." Without this defense system no one would live past infancy. In autoimmune disease, this system somehow becomes disordered, and an individual's immune system begins to attack his or her own tissues.
LFNC is also proud to announce Aliyah Lim, a 10-year-old lupus fighter will serve as the 2018 Outrun Lupus 5K Honoree. Aliyah andher family have formed the team Aliyah’s Warriors.
2018's Outrun Lupus 5K expects to welcome nearly 1,000 runners and walkers, friends, family members, community members and exhibitors. The Outrun Lupus 5K will award medals to top runners in categories divided by age group and gender, and trophies to largest and top fundraising teams.
Veteran NBC Bay Area and Telemundo reporter Damian Trujillo will be the emcee for the awards and closing ceremonies. Always a community affair, the Outrun Lupus 5K will feature local entertainment talent, children’s activities, and a dog area!
