Growing Up Asian in America

Celebrate Asian Heritage by Particiapting in "Growing Up Asian in America"

Growing Up Asian in America, a signature program of the Asian Pacific Fund, is one of the largest celebrations of Asian heritage in America. Every year, over a thousand Bay Area students in kindergarten through grade 12 submit artwork, essays, or poems on a single theme. This year there will also be a Media category, and high school students are invited to submit videos.

Students will compete for $20,000 in cash and prizes. Three finalists will be chosen in each grade category and contest category, and will win $1000 plus other prizes at an awards ceremony at the Asian Art Museum. Media finalists will win iPad minis and the chance to showcase their work online. Exhibits of the winning entries are hosted by 50 public libraries throughout the Bay Area, as well as museums and city halls. Essays and poems may also be featured on public radio.

The Asian Pacific Fund started Growing Up Asian in America in 1995 to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The program encourages young Asian Americans to take pride in and explore their Asian heritage, and share their creativity with the community.

The Asian Pacific Fund is a Bay Area community foundation established to improve the health and well-being of the Asian American community. While over 26 percent of the Bay Area population is Asian and 8 percent live in poverty, less than 1 percent of the foundation funding goes to organizations addressing the needs of Asians. The Fund helps fill this gap, having distributed over $5 million in grants, and providing services to a network of dynamic community organizations.

This year's program is presented by Target and Wells Fargo.
