The Barbershop Diaries: A Special Black History Month Celebration

The School of Mass Communications and Journalism at San Jose State University are proud to present, “The Barbershop Diaries,” a special Black History Month celebration honoring the South Bay African-American barbers and beauty salon owners. “The Barbershop Diaries” is a documentary that explores the eclectic lives of ten barbers who work at Barbers Inc., a neighborhood barbershop in downtown San Jose.

Typically, barbershops have been places where commerce, culture, masculinity, and politics intersect. The barber’s chair is usually where the customer unloads his woes while getting a cut and a shave. This project flips the script and tells another side to the story, the barber’s side that is so rarely heard. Some are heart-wrenching, others are full of hope, grit, and redemption. The documentary debuts on February 8, 2015.
