Wu Yee's Children's Services is bringing the San Francisco community together to discuss the growing economic disparities and help families bridge the afforability gap in a luncheon panel on Thursday, October 26.
Wu Yee's Children's Services provides families of San Francisco support in child development, family, and provider services - including assistive programs, child care training and the Family Child Care Quality Network (FCCQN).
The panel will discuss the future of early care and education, health equity and social policy. Panelists will explain the sources of poverty and why the imbalance persists, and continues to grow in San Francisco.
About the moderator and speakers:
Anda Kuo, MD - Doctor Kuo is a UCSF pediatrician leading the way in making child health and wellness a reality for all children the Bay Area. To achieve this vision, she established UCSF's Child Health Equity Collective in 2015. In 2014-2015 she was the Founding Director of the UCSF Pediatric Leadership for the Underserved (PLUS) residency program and served as the Associate Director of Curriculum for the UCSF Pathways to Health and Society from 2011 to 2015. From 2012-2015, Dr. Kuo served as a First Five Commissioner for San Francisco. In 2015 Dr. Kuo joined the Board of the 3rd Street Youth Center and Clinic. In 2013 Dr. Kuo received an Academy Chair in Pediatric Education to advance the educational initiatives of the Child Health Equity Collective. Dr. Kuo welcomes collaborations across the health professions and beyond.
Bertram Lubin, MD - Doctor Lubin's career in Academic Pediatrics and children's health advocacy has spanned fifty years. His work has led to basic, clinical, and social advancements, which have improved the lives of countless children and adults focusing on underserved populations. In 1980, Dr. Lubin became the first physician director of medical research at Children’s Hospital Oakland. Under his leadership, basic, clinical and translational research activities expanded exponentially. In 2009, Dr. Lubin became the President and CEO of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals. In 2015, Dr. Lubin founded the Center for Community Health and Engagement to provide leadership, services, and research to address the impact of social determinants, poverty, and health equity of children.
Assemblymember David Chiu - In 2014, David Chiu was elected to the California State Legislature to represent the 17th Assembly District, which encompasses eastern San Francisco. He was re-elected in 2016. Before joining the State Assembly, David Chiu served as President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for six years. As Supervisor, David Chiu authored 110 ordinances across a wide range of policy areas, including affordable housing, job creation, public safety, healthcare, the environment, transportation, civil rights, language access, ethics and technology. He has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, an American Memorial Marshall Fellow, and one of the “Best Attorneys under 40” by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association.
