The actor who plays the lead villain in the forthcoming movie “The Amazing Spider-Man” was arrested for misdemeanor battery after he shoved a security guard on his way into a promotional event for the flick at Comic-Con, police said.

Rhys Ifans “was abusive, belligerent and aggressive” Friday evening and shoved the female guard, and one person in his entourage did not have proper ID to get into the pop culture convention, San Diego police spokeswoman Lt. Andra Brown said Saturday, Reuters reported.
According to Us Weekly, Brown said that Ifans “was berating everyone from the security staff to the United States of America." His breath smelled like alcohol, Reuters reported.
The British actor, who portrays a one-armed scientist who morphs into a green villain called the Lizard in the “Spider-Man” reboot, participated in a panel with costars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone at Comic-Con, with the guard making a citizen’s arrest afterward, Us Weekly said. He was given a citation and not taken into custody.
Sony Pictures said in a statement to TheWrap that Ifans “deeply regrets the incident.” His 44th birthday was Friday.
“The Amazing Spider-Man,” which stars Garfield as Peter Parker, is due to be released next July.
