How Well Will Fallon Follow Gervais, Fey and Poehler as Golden Globes Host?

Can Fallon's brand of humor translate into a golden hosting performance?

Jimmy Fallon may have nearly three years under his belt as host of "The Tonight Show," but hosting an award show is a different beast. And while Fallon has previous experience hosting the 2010 Emmy Awards, he's never had to follow the biting humor of a Ricky Gervais nor will he be able to duplicate the winning chemistry of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Here's a look at the big shoes Fallon is looking to fill.

Ricky Gervais, 2010-12, 2016

2015’s best in TV and movies will be honored Sunday night at the Golden Globes, and a familiar face will be back to host the proceedings: Comedian Ricky Gervais returns for the fourth time.

Gervais had a particularly biting tone at last year’s awards show, including jabs at Caitlyn Jenner and Bill Cosby. His blunt and off-the-cuff attitude throughout the show lead to mixed reviews that saw his performance as overwhelmingly awkward, with a few glimpses of humor.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, 2013-15

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler gear up for 2014 Golden Globes, their second time around hosting the awards show.

The best comedic women duo chose not to renew their three-year hosting contract, but received widespread praise for their playful tone throughout their hosting run. Their upbeat humor, a combination of pointing out gender inequality and George Clooney jokes, garnered winning reviews about the duo.

Jimmy Fallon - 2017

So what will Fallon bring to the table? Possibly some “thank you notes,” some shout outs and, if we’re lucky, maybe even original Jimmy musical performance.

Tune in on Jan. 8 to watch the Golden Globe Awards on NBC at 8 p.m. EST.
