NYT: Affleck Refused to Wear Yankees Hat in “Gone Girl”

Growing up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Ben Affleck is a life-long diehard Red Sox fan and there was no way he was going to wear a Yankees cap in "Gone Girl," The New York Times reports.

Affleck, speaking with the New York Times about what it was like to make the film, which opened Friday, said there was a Red-Sox vs. Yankees battle on the set.

“I said, ‘David (director David Fincher), I love you, I would do anything for you,’” Affleck told the Times. “‘But I will not wear a Yankees hat. I just can’t. I can’t wear it because it’s going to become a thing, David. I will never hear the end of it. I can’t do it.’ And I couldn’t put it on my head.”

The movie "Gone Girl" is based on the best-selling mystery thriller by Chicago author Gillian Flynn. Affleck plays Nick Dunne, a man suspected of murdering his wife, Amy, who has mysteriously vanished, leaving a trail of cryptic clues in her wake.

The scene in which Affleck was supposed to wear the Yankees hat was set in a New York airport, the New York Times reports, and it was the only fight he had with director David Fincher.

So they reached a compromise: In the scene, Affleck wears a Mets hat.

“Gone Girl” opened in theaters Friday night.
