R&B Star Johnny Carter Dead at 75

"Oh What a Night" singer from supergroup the Dells passes away

R&B singer John E. (Johnny) Carter, famous for his soulful voice and work with supergroups the Dells and the Flamingos, passed away in his hometown of Harvey, Ill., Thursday evening after a long battle with lung cancer ended his lifelong career in the music industry.

Carter's death was announced by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which twice inducted Carter for his work with the two groups and for hits like "Oh What a Night," the 1954 Dells hit that featured Carter on falsetto lead.

Carter was the last surviving member of the Flamingos, which he left in 1960 to form the Dells with four other friends from his high-school days in Harvey.

He's also famous for the Dells blockbuster "Stay in My Corner," one of the first R&B tracks that lasted longer than six minutes.

He's survived by his five daughters and several grandchildren.
