Big Oooops! Causes Bubble Trouble at Airport

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Firefighting foam filled up and spilled out of a mammoth hangar Thursday at Long Beach Airport, leaving a mess 6-to-10 feet deep that covered a police helicopter.

The accident occurred just before 11 a.m. when the fire suppression system was accidentally triggered at the 109,000-square foot hanger. The building houses a refueling station and parked aircraft, including the Long Beach Police Department helicopter.

The high expansion foam, which deprives fire of oxygen, reached almost to the ceiling at one point. No fire was reported.

No injuries were reported, but the police chopper remained underneath the foam.

The hangar is operated by a private vendor, which advertises that the high-volume foam system is fed by its own 70,000 gallon water tank.
