A woman's body was found in a ravine near Richmond's Lincoln Elementary School this morning, a police spokesman said.
Police are investigating the discovery as a possible homicide.
Around 6:30 a.m., a passerby told police there was a person down in the Richmond Greenway, a trail that runs parallel to Ohio Avenue, police Lt. Mark Gagan said.
Arriving officers found the body of a woman in her 40s who appears to have suffered blunt force wounds, Gagan said. The body was located in a ravine alone the path, about 50 feet from Lincoln Elementary School at 29 Sixth St.
"We don't know exactly where or when the crime occurred," Gagan said.
No suspect information was immediately available in the apparent homicide, which would mark the city's 26th murder of the year.
Police are working with the school to ensure that students do not witness the investigation.
The school's auditorium, which is the closest building on the campus to the spot where the body was found, is closed, but classes are being held this morning, Gagan said.
