Top-rated paddle surfers and kayak surfers will be braving ocean swells through Sunday at the Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival.
Organizers say the festival is the largest kayak surf competition in the world. Events will be held at the Steamer Lane point break near Lighthouse Point in Santa Cruz and include races for men, women, juniors and college teams.
This year's festival includes a new elite category of stand-up paddleboard surfers and team competition for college and university students.
Opening celebrations begin at 5 p.m. Friday and feature music and barbecue. The festival will feature music and food booths for visitors throughout the weekend.
