Are You Kidding Me!? $18 in Change For an SF Parking Meter?

Pilot project testing prices

The fees to park a car in parts of San Francisco will soon depend on the supply and demand of parking spaces.

Under a pilot project approved Tuesday, parking rates could run as high as $18 an hour or drop as low as 25 cents.

The $18 hourly rate would be charged during special events, such as baseball games and large concerts. During other busy times, meter parking would run as high as $6.

At times when there are plenty of spaces available, meters rates would drop to 25 cents an hour.

The plan approved by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will also determine how rates are charged in city-owned parking lots.

The new fees are expected to be phased in next spring during a pilot project set to run for 18 months in targeted neighborhoods.
