From the depths of the Macy's basement, Michelin and its always-dapper bossman Jean-Luc Naret just announced the 2009 San Francisco star rankings. As expected, no one joined The French Laundry in the three-star category once again, but there were some star shuffles from last year's version. The biggest rise—as spoiled earlier—was by Daniel Patterson and Coi, promoted to two stars. There were also four newcomers to the one-star category: Murray Circle, Plumed Horse, Trevese and according to Naret (who made the calls this morning), a surprised and ecstatic Village Pub. Just as intriguing though, are the restaurants absent from this year's star list:

Before we get into the new crop of stars, let's not forget the restaurants that lost their precious one star rating. Cortez, K&L Bistro, La Toque, Quince, Rubicon and Sushi Ran. Some of the demotions are due to obvious reasons (closure, chef shuffles, venue shuffles), but some not so much, with Quince being the highest-profile absence here. Chez TJ was also demoted from two to one, though Christopher Kostow, who went from TJ to Meadowood, kept his personal deuce.
