Pro Baseball Coming to San Rafael

It's a hit! The plan to bring a minor league baseball team to San Rafael won initial approval on Monday

Game on.

Professional baseball is coming to Marin County, after the San Rafael City Council gave the thumbs-up to a minor league team's proposal to use the city's Albert Park, according to the Marin Independent Journal.

Centerfield Partners' plan to bring a North American League team to the city was scaled back in order to fly with San Rafael neighbors, who were concerned about noise and traffic crowding, according to the newspaper. The business leaders agreed to a one-year lease instead of a three-year deal, to provide free parking and only temporary concession stands, and to limit seating to existing grandstands plus about 100 extra seats, the newspaper reported.

Supporters of the ballpark say that the team will bring jobs as well as vibrancy to the city's downtown. Opponents are worried mostly about noise, something for which City Council member Greg Brockbank appeared to have little sympathy.

"Complaining about crowd noise when you've moved near a ballpark is to me like complaining about air noise when you've moved near an airport," he said, according to the newspaper.
