Q102.1: New Radio Station Launches Today

Format focuses on old-school R&B and hip-hop

Beyoncé and Pharrell Williams are playing in place of Pat Benetar and AC/DC on 102.1 FM today, the result of a brand new station called Q102.

Radio industry news site FMQB reports that the new station launched today (August 1) at 2 PM. The chosen format is called Rhythmic Hot Adult Contemporary, meaning the focus is on hit R&B and hip-hop songs from the past 20 years, with a dash of current dance music. For example, songs such as "Happy" by Williams, "In Da Club" by 50 Cent, "Killing Me Softly" by Fugees, "Jealous" by Chromeo and "Summer" by Calvin Harris have played during the first few hours of Q102.

Q102 takes the frequency of classic rock station KFOX, which can now be heard solely on its South Bay-focused frequency of 98.5 FM. Both are owned by Entercom.
