Rally to Save Eagle Tavern

In the wake of this weekend's announcement that the famed Eagle Tavern would shut its doors for good come May, hundreds of supporters gathered at the historic SOMA hang Monday night in a last ditch effort to save the venue. The rally was planned after current Eagle Tavern owners John Gardiner and Joe Banks confirmed suspicions that the bar's closure fell solely on the leather hang's property owner -- rather than renew or transfer the current lease, they plan to convert the space to condos or a non-LGBT identified bar. And while the owner's are not overly optimistic regarding the bar's potential future, patrons, musicians and community activist refuse to go down without a fight. Along with a heated public debate on potential ways to save the bar and accompanying epic beer garden, a diverse group of diehards converged on decidedly non-gay-friendly Mission lounge Skylark -- word is they may be taking over the lease -- chanting "Hell no, we won't let the Eagle go." Video evidence here.

Supporters of the Eagle Tavern have planned a lunchtime rally and conference today at City Hall -- RSVP for the 1 p.m. event over at Facebook.
