In London, the restaurant industry might be even more cutthroat than on this side of the pond. To wit, consider what happened when star chef Marcus Wareing formally took over one of Gordon Ramsay's restaurants: "The reason the chef's table was free is interesting. You see, at the moment that Marcus announced he was going it alone, the [Ramsay] holding group called everyone in the reservations book to tell them the restaurant had closed, and offered them consolation tables at other restaurants in the group instead ... Marcus's first week with his name above the door – one of London's finest chefs in, to the naked eye, a brand new restaurant – and the reservations book is as blank as a moron's stare."
