Several Rescued, One Dies in SF Fire

One person died in a two-alarm fire at a four-story apartment  building near Bush and Taylor streets in San Francisco today, fire Lt. Mindy  Talmadge said.

The fire was reported at 12:15 p.m. at 947 Bush St. and was  extinguished about 35 minutes later.

Firefighters rescued three people who were trapped on fire escapes  and several others were transported to hospitals for injuries that did not  appear to be life-threatening, Talmadge said.

Most crews had left the scene by the time fire investigators  discovered a body inside a burned area on the second floor.

"They were pulling up some debris and they found a fatality,"  Talmadge said.

A coroner was called to the scene shortly after 2 p.m.

Talmadge did not know whether the victim was a man or a woman.

The fire displaced at least several people, and the American Red  Cross was called to provide assistance.

Talmadge said the 53-unit building houses some elderly and  disabled residents.

Seventy-five firefighters battled the fire.
