SF Teacher Earns 25K Bonus For Doing Job

Surprise announement during Monday assembly

A San Francisco elementary school teacher is $25,000 richer and the winner of a prestigious award for her work as a teacher.

In what was a surprise announcement at San Francisco's Visitacion Valley Elementary School, Mindy Yip was named a winner of the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award.

The first-grade teacher had no idea she was going to receive the honor.

She and other teachers and students had gathered in an assembly Monday to hear what they had been told would be an announcement about test scores.

Instead, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other dignitaries were there to announce that Yip was a winner of the award.

Yip is one of 80 teachers across the country that will receive the Milken award this year.
